A luxury candle is more than home décor... it's an experience! With the right candle care, you can enjoy a cleaner burn, a stronger fragrance throw and maximize every hour of burn time.
Whether you've just purchased your first luxury candle or you've been collecting them for years, following a few simple candle care tips will help you get the most from every burn.
Why Candle Care Matters
Proper candle care isn't just about making your candle last longer, it also helps:
- Create a cleaner, more even burn
- Prevent tunneling
- Maximize scent throughout your space
- Extend the life of your candle
- Keep your vessel looking beautiful from first light to final burn
- To ensure a safe candle burning experience
At Applewood Candle Co., every candle is thoughtfully hand-crafted using only non-toxic ingredients, including a clean coconut-soy wax blend, FSC-certified wooden wicks and premium scents. A few seconds of care ensures you experience your candle exactly as it was designed!
Before Every Burn: Trim Your Wooden Wick
One of the most important candle care tips is trimming your wick before every burn.
For wooden wick candles, trim the wick to approximately 1/8–3/16 inch before lighting. You can gently remove the charred wood with your fingers or use a wick trimmer.
Why?
- Creates a consistent flame
- Reduces soot and smoke
- Prevents the flame from becoming too large
- Helps your candle burn evenly
A properly trimmed wick is the key to a beautiful, steady flame.
Let the Wax Melt to the Edges
During your first burn, allow the melted wax to almost reach the edges of the vessel before extinguishing the flame.
This usually takes around 4 hours.
Why is this important?
Candles develop a "memory." If the wax doesn't melt completely across during the first few burns, it may continue creating a tunnel down the center, leaving wax along the sides that never melts. Coconut soy wax is much more forgiving than 100% soy, but we always like to suggest letting your candle burn the longest on the first burn!
An even melt pool helps your candle burn efficiently from beginning to end.
Burn Your Candle for 2–4 Hours
For the best performance, burn your candle for 2–4 hours at a time.
Burning for too short of a time may cause tunneling, while burning for excessively long periods can cause the wick to become too hot and the scent to evaporate more quickly (plus, that just wouldn't be safe!)
Think of your candle like a slow, relaxing ritual, not something to leave burning all day.
Keep Candles Away from Drafts
Airflow plays a major role in how your candle burns. This is a big one in these warmer months where you may have the window open, or the AC blasting.
Avoid placing candles near:
- Air conditioning vents
- Ceiling fans
- Open windows
- Frequently opened doors
Drafts cause the flame to flicker excessively, resulting in uneven burning, wasted wax, and additional soot. This can also cause the flame to completely diminish.
Choose a stable location where the flame can burn calmly.
Extinguish Your Candle Properly
Rather than blowing your candle out forcefully, gently snuff the flame whenever possible. This helps reduce smoke and keeps the wick in better condition for your next burn.
Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Always remove any debris from your candle before lighting.
This includes:
- Wick trimmings
- Matches
- Dust
Keeping the wax clean allows the candle to burn safely and evenly.
Know When It's Time to Stop Burning
For safety, discontinue use when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
Burning beyond this point can cause the vessel to become excessively hot.
The good news? Your vessel can be cleaned and repurposed for storage, décor, or organization throughout your home.
Common Candle Care Questions
Why is my candle tunneling?
Tunneling usually happens when the candle isn't allowed to develop a full melt pool during the first few burns or when it's extinguished too quickly.
Why is my wooden wick crackling?
A gentle crackling sound is completely normal and is one of the signature characteristics of Applewood! This is why many people love our wooden wick candles.
Why is my flame too small?
Most often, the wick simply needs to be trimmed to remove excess char before relighting.
How long should I burn my candle?
For most luxury candles, 2–4 hours per burn provides the best balance between fragrance performance and candle longevity.
